Biography

John Henry Creach, 28 May 1917, Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, USA, d. 22 February 1994, Los Angeles, California, USA. Creach began his career as a fiddle player upon his family’s move to Chicago in 1935. He later toured the Midwest of the USA as a member of cabaret attraction the Chocolate Music Bars, but settled in California in 1945. Creach played in the resident band at Palm Springs’ Chi Chi Restaurant, undertook session work and entertained tourists on a luxury liner before securing a spot at the Parisian Room in Los Angeles. He was ‘discovered’ at this venue by Joey Covington, drummer in Hot Tuna and Jefferson Airplane, and by October 1970 Creach was a member of both groups. His tenure was not without controversy; many aficionados resented this intrusion, but although he left the former group two years later, ‘Papa’ John remained with the latter act until 1975, surviving their transformation into Jefferson Starship.
