Biography

6 January 1937, Asti, Piedmont, Italy. After spending much of his professional life as a lawyer, jazz enthusiast Conte eventually decided to act on his impulse to become a performer in the 70s. He had recorded an unsuccessful EP for RCA Records in 1962, entitled The Italian Way To Swing, and collaborated with his brother Giorgio as a songwriter, enjoying success in the late 60s with the Italian hits ‘La Coppia Piu’ Bella’ and ‘Azzurro’ for Adriano Celentano. Conte re-emerged as a performer in the mid-70s, releasing a self-titled album in 1974. He quickly amassed a huge audience for his gentle, acoustic jazz, which often incorporates native Latin elements such as the tango, samba and quadrille. Particular praise has been reserved for his evocative, and often exotic, lyrics.
