The solo creation of Mark Nelson (29 August 1965, Berlin, Germany), one third of neo-classicists Labradford. Inspired by Arvo Pärt and Augustus Pablo in equal measure, Nelson (programming/pedal steel/piano) is one of Americas most intriguing and engaging contemporary musicians. With Labradford Nelson has created some of the most touching and graceful music to come out of the USA in the late twentieth/early twenty-first century. When Labradford visited the UK in 1997, a disused and candle-lit synagogue was deemed an appropriate venue for a live show.
In his more rhythmic solo incarnation, Pan American, Nelson utilizes a similar sense of space and atmospherics to that of his usual band but, like much of the best current American music, also looks towards esoteric European electronica labels such as Warp Records or Mego for inspiration: one song on his 1998 debut, self-titled album sounds like the synth-motif from a generic rave...
