Biography

Francisco Sánchez Gómez, 21 December 1947, Algeciras, Cadiz, Spain. De Lucía’s parents, Lucía Gómez and Antonio Sánchez, were artisans although his father played guitar. More significantly, his father had great ambitions for all his sons, in particular in music. De Lucía began playing guitar at the age of six, being tutored in flamenco music by his father. His brother, Ramón De Algeciras, also became a guitarist; another brother, Pepe De Lucía, became a noted flamenco singer. The fourth brother, Antonio, was the only one not to take up music as a career, instead entering linguistics. De Lucía made his first public appearance in a 1958 radio broadcast and quickly became widely known for his precocious skills.
