Linford Detweiler (bass/keyboards) and Karin Bergquist (vocals/guitar) met while studying at Malon College in Canton, Ohio, and formed Over The Rhine in 1989. The duo, who would later augment their professional union with a personal one, were joined by Ric Hordinski (guitar) and Brian Kelley (drums) for the release of the band’s 1991 debut Till We Have Faces. This arty indie pop collection rarely took flight, but when it did (‘Like A Radio’, ‘If I’m Drowning’) the results were encouraging. The follow-up Patience, released in 1992, suffered from the same murky production as its predecessor, but once again the combination of Detweiler’s literate songwriting and Bergquist’s sultry vocals shone through on a number of stand-out tracks, notably the opening ‘Jacksie’ and ‘I’ve Been Slipping’.
