Allan Bentley Gumbs, 3 September 1949, New York City, New York, USA. Gumbs studied piano and composition extensively from the age of seven both privately and at several prestigious academies through into the early 70s. From the mid-60s he played professionally with various leaders including Andrew Langston, Errol Rolle, Kenny Burrell, Norman Connors, Carlos Garnett, Jimmy Owens, Frank Foster, Buster Williams, Nat Adderley, Woody Shaw, Sadao Watanabe, and Stanley Jordan. Gumbs was also frequently called upon by singers, in some instances acting also as musical director: Betty Carter in 1976, Phyllis Hyman, Angela Bofill, Sathima Bea Benjamin, Jeffrey Osborne and Deniece Williams. Gumbs formed his own group, Snowflight, in the early 80s. During these years, he also acted as record producer for his own albums and also for others, including singers Will Downing, Vanessa Rubin and Marlena Shaw.
