Biography
Lal Waterson (Elaine Waterson, 15 February 1943, England, d. 4 September 1998) and her son Oliver Knight (b. Hull, North Humberside, England) were already renowned figures within the UK folk community when they launched their joint 1996 album, Once In A Blue Moon. Lal Waterson originally trained as a painter and weaver, and worked for seven years as an heraldic artist before beginning her singing career in 1961 as a member of the Watersons. This band enjoyed massive popularity as pioneers of English traditional music until their temporary retirement in 1968. Lal continued to collaborate with brother Mike Waterson, writing songs and poetry which eventually culminated in the release of the acclaimed Bright Phoebus album, featuring contributions from Richard Thompson, Martin Carthy and Ashley Hutchings. Together with her daughter Maria and niece Eliza Carthy she also toured with the Waterdaughters, but retired from public performances in later years.
