Biography

Formed in Miami, Florida, USA, 1968, the origins of NRBQ (New Rhythm & Blues Quintet) were actually in Louisville, Kentucky a few years earlier. There, Terry Adams (14 August 1950; keyboards) and Steve Ferguson (b. 1947, Louisville, Kentucky, USA; guitar) were members of a group called Merseybeats USA. Moving to Miami, the pair joined with New York musicians Frank Gadler (vocals) and Jody St. Nicholas (b. Joseph (Joey) Spampinato, 29 January 1948; bass/vocals), then working with a group named the Seven Of Us. Tom Staley (drums) and the horn section of Keith Spring (saxophone) and Donn Adams (trombone) completed the line-up of the newly minted NRBQ, who then relocated to New Jersey. They were signed by Columbia Records in New York and released their self-titled debut album in 1969.
