Biography
1967, Syracuse, New York, USA. After performing in theatrical drama, Mitchell moved in 1998 to Chicago. A highly accomplished flautist, singer and composer, she formed her own bands, Black Earth Ensemble, Black Earth Strings and her own quartet. From her Chicago base, Mitchell became widely known, owing in part to successful tours of North America and Europe. Musicians with whom she has performed include Anthony Braxton, Muhal Richard Abrams (playing in duo), David Boykin, Bill Dixon, Lori Freedman, George Lewis and the International Composers And Improvisers Ensemble, Miya Masaoka, Rob Mazurek, James Newton and Edward Wilkerson Jnr. With Harrison Bankhead and Hamid Drake, Mitchell plays in the Indigo Trio. Mitchells jazz is a persuasive blend of traditional sub-genres and post-modernism.
