
Biography
American musicians Mike Seeger (15 August 1933, New York City, New York, USA), John Cohen (b. 2 August 1932, New York City, New York, USA) and Tom Paley (b. 19 March 1928, New York, USA) formed this influential old-time string band in 1958. Rather than ape their immediate predecessors who popularized the style, the trio preferred to invoke the music's original proponents, including the Skillet Lickers and the Carolina Tar Heels. Seeger undertook numerous field recordings to preserve authenticity and while their adherence to traditional values made commercial acceptance difficult, the group enjoyed the admiration of their peers and was crucial in the development of the urban folk revival. The original line-up remained together until August 1962, when Paley left to resume his teaching career.
