Mayer was a typical transitional US R&B artist, whose vocal intensity evoked both the doo-wop past and the emerging soul music. This style was magnificently realized in his lone hit, Village Of Love, which went to number 16 R&B and number 22 pop in 1962. It was recorded for a small Detroit company, Fortune, and proved to be the biggest hit the label ever had (after being leased to United Artists Records). Mayer started singing in high school and recorded his first record, the wonderful My Last Dance With You, with a pick-up group. The single failed to attract buyers, but the follow-up, Village Of Love, recorded with the Fabulous Twilights, gave him a national audience.
