13 August 1955, Greenwood, Mississippi, USA. Miller learnt the piano while a child and studied music at university, at the same time playing in local gospel and R&B groups. After playing with Mercer Ellingtons Orchestra in the late 70s, he joined vocalist Betty Carter before moving on to the quintet of Woody Shaw and Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers (1983-86). He has added all the innovations of recent piano playing to this solid background, and fused them with a brilliant technique. In the late 80s he continued with his prolific studio career and played with the quintet of Tony Williams and Joe Lovano. His own trio became a priority in the 90s and the new millennium as he recorded a number of stylish albums, particularly the recent live recordings for MaxJazz.
