This short-lived, Seattle, USA-based quintet comprised Andrew Wood (8 January 1966, USA, d. 19 March 1990, USA; vocals, ex-Malfunkshun), Greg Gilmore (drums), and three members of recently demised grunge pioneers Green River, Bruce Fairweather (guitar), Stone Gossard (b. 20 July 1965, Seattle, Washington, USA; guitar), and Jeff Ament (b. 10 March 1963, Big Sandy, Montana, USA; bass). Drawing influences from the Stooges, MC5 and the Velvet Underground, Mother Love Bone specialized in heavy-duty garage rock laced with drug-fuelled psychotic overtones. Signing to Polydor Records, they debuted with 1989’s Shine EP, released on the Stardog imprint. Their promising career was curtailed abruptly by the untimely overdose death of vocalist Andrew Wood in March, shortly before the release of the excellent Apple.
