Biography

Monica Nilsson, 20 September 1937, Hagfors, Värmlands Iän, Sweden, d. 12 May 2005, Stockholm, Sweden. During the 50s Zetterlund sang in various parts of Scandinavia, often in good jazz company such as an orchestra led by Arne Domnérus with whom she recorded. She toured elsewhere in the late 50s and early 60s, including trips to the UK and the USA. Once again, her accompanists were of the highest order and a distinguished record session with Bill Evans was one such example. Like her fellow countrywoman, Alice Babs, she also sang traditional folk songs of Sweden and studied and sang music from the classical repertoire. Zetterlund’s singing was clean and well ordered and she had a nice sense of swing. Her interpretation of lyrics was also good and she coped comfortably with the idioms of what was to her a foreign language. In addition to singing, she also acted, working in this capacity mostly in her homeland.
