Biography
Formed to represent the music of Charles Mingus to the world this conglomerate was organized by his widow Sue, originally to play a tribute concert at Carnegie Hall in 1979, the year of the bass players death. That line-up used four horns and a rhythm section, but since the mid-90s a 14-piece band has played weekly at New Yorks Time Cafe and performed on the European festival circuit. Drawing on over 100 musicians, the band includes regular players such as Randy Brecker, Frank Lacy, Ku-Umba, Kenny Drew Jnr., Ryan Kisor, John Stubblefield (an original Mingus alumni), and musical directors Andy McKee and Steve Slagle.
