Biography
1949, Lees Summit, Missouri, USA. Metheny began playing trumpet at an early age, studying music formally at the University of Missouri/Columbia and Northeast Missouri State University. During military service in the early 70s, he played trumpet in the US Army Field Band in Washington DC. Shortly after he left the army, he was appointed to the faculty at the Berklee College Of Music, retaining the post into the early 80s. During his six years at Berklee, he also taught privately, his subjects being trumpet, music theory and jazz improvisation. During these same years, he led his own jazz quartet in Boston and various other towns and cities in New England and was honoured as the Outstanding Brass Player at the annual Boston Music Awards.
