Originating from Denton, Texas, this US indie rock band was formed in 2000 by North Texas School of Music students Tim Smith (3 October 1975, Tennessee, USA; vocals, guitar, keyboards), McKenzie Smith (b. 16 March 1979, Texas, USA; drums), Paul Alexander (b. 22 July 1975, Texas, USA; bass), Eric Nichelson (b. 20 July 1975, Texas, USA; guitar/keyboards) and Eric Pulido (b. 2 April 1979, Texas, USA; keyboards). Initially exploring a jazz funk-based direction, the unit gradually developed the rock and pop elements in their sound. Nichelson switched to keyboards with the departure of Evan Jacobs, with Jason Upshaw briefly added to the line-up as an additional guitarist. Eric Pulido replaced Upshaw on the bands first release, the 2001 EP Milkmaid GrandArmy, which they sold independently at their concerts.
