Biography
11 September 1943, New York, USA. Hart learned drums as a child and played in several local rock 'n' roll bands in the early 60s before moving to San Francisco. He later befriended Bill Kreutzmann, drummer with the Grateful Dead, whom he joined in 1968 following an in-concert jam session. The group's improvised style proved ideal for these imaginative percussionists whose poly-rhythmic approach enhanced their colleagues' desire for experimentation. Hart's contributions were particularly noteworthy on 1970's Live Dead, but the same year he left the band when his father Lenny, then their manager, misappropriated funds. However the ties were not completely sundered and Mickey's solo debut, Rolling Thunder, featured contributions from Grateful Dead acolytes Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh.
