Formed in Umeå, Sweden, Meshuggah came together after the band members progressed through local bands Metallien and Calipash and a first aborted Meshuggah line-up. The second and lasting incarnation of the band came together in time for 1989’s self-titled EP, and comprised Jens Kidman (Anthony Kidman, 8 June 1966, Sweden; vocals/guitar), Fredrik Thordendal (b. 11 February 1970, Sweden; guitar), Peter Nordin (bass), and Niklas Lundgren (drums). The EP, a competent thrash metal release, earned the band a recording contract with the Nuclear Blast label. Recruiting Tomas Haake (b. 13 July 1971, Sweden) to replace Lundgren, the band released their debut, Contradictions Collapse, in 1991.
