Lauded for their technical ability and abstract vision, Meshuggahs music has evolved from primal Metallica -esque thrash through to an intricate technical progressive metal, occasionally comparable to Watchtower or Dream Theater. Formed in Umeå, Sweden, Meshuggah came together after the band members progressed through local bands Metallien and Calipash and a first aborted Meshuggah line-up. The second and lasting incarnation of the band came together in time for 1989s self-titled EP, and comprised Jens Kidman (Anthony Kidman, 8 June 1966, Sweden; vocals/guitar), Fredrik Thordendal (b. 11 February 1970, Sweden; guitar), Peter Nordin (bass), and Niklas Lundgren (drums). The EP, a competent thrash metal release, earned the band a recording contract with the Nuclear Blast label. Recruiting Tomas Haake (b. 13 July 1971, Sweden) to replace Lundgren, the band released their debut, Contradictions Collapse, in 1991.
