Biography
Oregon City, Oregon, USA. Brooks launched her solo career in the mid-90s after a gap of over eight years from her previous recording efforts. In 1989, she was signed to A&M Records as a member of the Graces, a band she co-founded with Gina Clambotti, later a member of Bruce Springsteens touring group, and Charlotte Caffey, formerly of the Go-Gos. However, she soon became dissatisfied with life as part of that band. She took a break to marry, and thereafter concentrated on her own writing. She settled into running a restaurant alongside her husband, before meeting her future manager, Laurie Levy, in 1995. He encouraged her to become a full-time professional singer once again. She later explained that her long sabbatical was due to her disenchantment with the hold grunge had over the American music market.
