Biography

Formed in 1969, the heavy progressive rock sound of May Blitz comprised guitarist James Black and drummer Tony Newman, both veterans of Sounds Incorporated and the Jeff Beck Group. They were subsequently joined by Reid Hudson (bass). May Blitz showcased the trio’s forceful sound and, in particular, Black’s aggressive style, but it failed to emulate the success of lablemates Uriah Heep and Black Sabbath. Sadly the album became better known for the striking cover art by Tony Benyon, featuring an unflattering line drawing of an obese woman. The Second Of May was less satisfying and the group split up soon after its release. Newman subsequently joined Three Man Army and Boxer. Original vinyl copies of both albums are currently fetching very high prices due to the collectibility of Vertigo Records.
