Biography
Originating from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this US chamber pop band has been led from the outset by singer-songwriter Matt Pond. The titular leader had previously worked with indie rockers Mels Rockpile, but after leaving his native New England for Philadelphia he decided to concentrate on a more pop-orientated approach with his new band. Matt Pond PAs self-released 1998 debut Deer Apartments also featured Josh Kramer (guitar/bass), Sean Byrne (drums), Jim Hostetter (cello) and Rosie McNamara-Jones (violin). Both this album and the 2000 follow-up, Measure, established the bands unusual take on indie pop, with extensive use of strings and horns featuring inviting the chamber pop tag. Ponds vocals, meanwhile, were uncannily similar to Robert Smith of UK indie stalwarts the Cure.
