28 September 1966, Asheville, North Carolina, USA. This modern honky-tonk singers colourful upbringing was allegedly populated by bootleggers, preachers and sinners. King sold his collection of baseball cards so that he could visit Nashville and see if he could make any impression as a singer and songwriter. Atlantic Records recognised his potential as a warm balladeer in the Keith Whitley and George Jones mould. He co-wrote most of the material on his debut album Five OClock Hero, the title track of which paid tribute to the working man. After promoting the album, he had a creative period of four solid days writing, and the songs formed the basis of his second collection Hard Country. This far more satisfying album includes a revival of Billy Crash Craddocks Rub It In and also has guest vocals from Patty Loveless and Alison Krauss.
