Matthew Albert Costa, 16 June 1982, Huntington Beach, California, USA. Although he learned to play guitar in his early teens, singer-songwriter Costa was more intent on a pro-skateboarding career. A bad injury curtailed his plans and while he was recovering from a broken leg, Costa turned his attention back to music. His early demos came to the attention of No Doubt guitarist Tom Dumont, who encouraged Costa to record his first EP. The duo continued working together and completed the material that made up Costas independent, Songs We Sing. Released in summer 2005, the album was a pleasing collection of gentle pop rock that caught the ear of Jack Johnson, a similarly styled singer-songwriter whose career had taken off during this period. Johnson signed Costa to his Brushfire label and released a new version of Songs We Sing at the start of the following year, featuring new tracks and a reconfigured tracklisting.
