Biography
25 March 1961, North Hollywood, California, USA. Born into a musical family (his mother is singer Mavis Rivers), Catingub taught himself to play the piano at the age of seven and four years later was also proficient on the clarinet. At 16 he began arranging and composing and additionally took up formal music studies. The following year he switched to alto saxophone. In 1978 he was a member of the California All-Star High School big band which annually appears at the Monterey Jazz Festival. His composition Monterey I was played at the festival and helped him to win a festival scholarship. That same year he visited Japan as a member of the Monterey All-Stars in company with artists such as Thad Jones, Mel Lewis and Dizzy Gillespie. In 1979 (and again in 1981), he joined Louie Bellsons big band, for which he also composed and arranged.
