Biography

Martin Oliver Grosz, 28 February 1930, Berlin, Germany. Resident in the USA since the age of three, Grosz began playing banjo and guitar in and around New York while still attending university. His musical inclinations were towards dixieland jazz, which he played with artists such as Dick Wellstood. After military service he settled in Chicago and played there for several years in local clubs, making a few records but making little impression on the national jazz scene. In the mid-70s he moved back to New York and joined Soprano Summit, the excellent small band co-led by Bob Wilber and Kenny Davern. His compositions ‘Let Your Fingers Do The Walking’ and ‘Goody Goody’ were acoustic guitar duets with Wayne Wright. In the late 70s Grosz resumed his working relationship with Wellstood and established a new and musically rewarding partnership with Dick Sudhalter that continued into the following decades.
