Biography

8 May 1976, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The youngest child of singer-songwriters Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, Martha Wainwright followed her elder brother Rufus Wainwright into a music career in the late 90s. Like Rufus, she was brought up surrounded by music even though her parents split up when she was only 12-months old. Martha shared the dubious honour with her brother of being immortalized on their father’s records while he spent much of his time away from the family home, with the tracks ‘Five Years Old’ and ‘Hitting You’ offering particularly telling glimpses into the family’s troubled personal relationships. Martha studied drama at Montreal’s Concordia University and began performing the coffee house circuit while still a student. In the late 90s she began releasing a series of cassettes and EPs, including Ground Floor (1997) and Martha Wainwright (1999), melding folk, rock and pop to notable effect on tracks...
