7 January 1949, Spartanburg, North Carolina, USA. Chapman came from a wealthy family and spent time in France before moving to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1973. She signed with Epic Records and toured as a rock act, but found her songs had more favour with country audiences. Her composition, ‘A Woman’s Heart (Is A Handy Place To Be)’, was covered by Crystal Gayle and by Jessi Colter. ‘Somewhere South Of Macon’ was considered too outspoken for country radio.
