Originally based in California, 12-string folk/blues guitarist Spoelstras songwriting career burgeoned following a move to New York where he realized the potential of performing original material. A confirmed pacifist and a conscientious objector to military service, his songs often reflected such themes and he was a regular contributor to Broadside, a magazine founded as an outlet for topical and protest material. He was very much a part of the Greenwich Village radical folk scene of the early 60s. Having completed two albums for the Folkways Records label, Spoelstra joined Elektra Records. His Elektra debut Five & Twenty Questions (1965), featured 12 original songs and introduced his quiet, unassuming style.
