Biography

1 July 1967, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. One of the most original Brazilian singers of the 90s, Monte has inherited the legacy of Gal Costa and Elis Regina not only with her amazing voice but with her taste for artistic risk. Her first musical interest was in the drums, which she started playing at nine years old. By the time she was 18, Monte had decided she wanted to be an opera singer, and she moved to Italy to study bel canto. Fortunately for Brazilian popular music, her operatic aspirations were short-lived. She returned to Rio and started performing in small clubs, and her rapid success soon led to a record contract. Her self-titled debut was released in 1988 and highlighted her eclectic repertoire, which included George Gershwin’s ‘Bess, You Is My Woman Now’ and a reggae version of ‘I Heard It Through the Grapevine’.
