Biography
Mary Ellen Harrison, 1896, Henderson, Kentucky, USA, d. 23 April 1944, New York City, New York, USA. A very popular singer on New York’s cabaret circuit during the first quarter of the twentieth century, Harris recorded several blues and jazz sessions for Victor Records between 1916 and 1928. Hits such as ‘I Ain’t Got Nobody’, ‘Paradise Blues’, ‘Everybody’s Crazy ’Bout The Doggone Blues’ and ‘After You’ve Gone’ helped establish her as one of the leading jazz performers of the decade. She signed a new contract with Columbia Records in 1920, and Brunswick Records two years later, but returned to the Victor label in 1927 to record ‘The Man I Love’ and ‘Did You Mean It?’. By this time Harris was equally well known for her stage and film appearances.
