1967, Conyers, Georgia, USA. Beginning life in a small southern town, Printup grew up around the music of the church. His formal musical education began with marching, concert and jazz bands at high school. Staying close to home, Printup attended Georgia State University in Atlanta, where he became a featured trumpet soloist with the schools jazz band, as well as participating in the wind ensemble and brass groups. Printup soon outgrew the local college, however, and transferred to the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida. The schools music programme at that time was led by jazz baritonist Rich Matteson. While there, Printup won honours in several national competitions, including the National Collegiate Jazz Competition and the 1991 Thelonious Monk International Trumpet Competition.
