Biography
21 May 1954, Newark, New Jersey, USA. Ribot began playing guitar as a child, informally joining several garage bands while studying formally with classical guitarist and composer Frantz Casseus. Later, Ribot would dedicate an album to this Haitian-born guitarist-composer. In 1978, Ribot played with Brother Jack McDuff and Wilson Pickett, then joined the Realtones and the Uptown Horns Band. The latter group was on numerous recording sessions with artists such as Solomon Burke, Carla Thomas and Rufus Thomas. The following year, Ribot joined John Luries Lounge Lizards where he remained for five years. Owing in part to this engagement, and the concurrent popularity of New Yorks downtown scene, Ribots blues-inflected playing began attracting a great deal of attention.
