Formed in the mid-80s in Vacaville, California, USA, Magellan was originally a project put together by brothers Wayne (guitar) and Trent (lead vocals/keyboards) Gardner. Together with Hal Stringfellow Imbrie (bass/vocals), they set out to reinstate the progressive rock tradition of the 70s, which married riffs to jazz and classical flourishes. This combination was finely executed on their 1991 debut, Hour Of Restoration, which added modern, computer-generated possibilities to the equation. August 1993 saw the release of its follow-up, Impending Ascension, which earned comparisons to Dream Theaters crafted electro-rock. Opponents of grandiose musical statements were rewarded with much at which to scoff, including quotes drawn from Shakespeare, Poe and Magellan, the explorer from whom the band draws their name.
