Matthew Ward, 1974, Ventura County, California, USA. Singer-songwriter and guitarist Ward manages to touch upon all the elements of the roots rock and alt country genres, earning comparisons to artists such as Tom Waits, Grandaddy, Sparklehorse, and Giant Sand’s Howe Gelb. Ward was first spotted as a member of the California-based trio Rodriguez, before setting out on his own as a solo artist. Moving to Portland, Oregon, he was signed by Gelb to his indie label, Ow Om Records. Ward’s solo debut, Duets For Guitars #2, was released to low-key acclaim in 2000. He followed it up with End Of Amnesia, and toured alongside Conor Oberst on his US Bright Eyes Orchestra jaunt. Ward’s solo albums were sold at a brisk rate during this tour, helping to promote record company interest in the artist.
