One of the most promising UK soul artists to emerge in the late 90s, Hall was often compared to American singers such as D’Angelo, Eric Benét and Rahsaan Patterson for his championing of the singer-songwriter tradition in modern urban soul. Signed to Cooltempo Records, Hall’s ‘Do I Qualify’, with its compelling blend of classic and modern soul styles, was a stand-out track on the label’s Nu Classic Soul compilation. His 1998 debut album, Medicine 4 My Pain, featured four tracks recorded at Sony Studios in New York with producer Bob Power, whose impeccable nu soul credits included Erykah Badu, the Roots and D’Angelo. The precociously talented Hall wrote, produced and played guitars, bass, keyboards and drums on all 11 tracks, paying homage to soul giants Al Green and Curtis Mayfield while still sounding utterly contemporary.
