Edward Louis Smith, 20 May 1931, Memphis, Tennessee, USA. Smith began playing trumpet at the start of his teenage years, subsequently playing in the Manassas High School Band before attending Tennessee State University where he studied music. While at TSU he was a member of the Tennessee State Collegians, performing with them at Carnegie Hall in New York City. From Tennessee, he went to the University of Michigan, studying trumpet and revelling in the opportunity to play for or with visiting jazz musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Thad Jones. During military service, which started in 1954, Smith was able to continue playing music in an army band, but after his discharge at the end of 1955 he took up a teaching post in Atlanta, Georgia, moving on from there to teach at the University of Michigan and at public schools in the Ann Arbor area, remaining in education for most of the next 40 years.
