Pascal Lokua Kanza, April 1958, Bukavu, Kivu, Zaire. Guitarist/vocalist Kanza studied at the Kinshasa Music Conservatory in his native Zaire, and in 1980 joined the band of superstar diva Abeti. The following year he relocated to the Ivory Coast where he worked as a guitar player with a number of bands, before becoming a singer in the Best Orchestra at the Hotel Ivoire in Abidjan. He moved to Paris, France in 1984 to study jazz at the CIM, and quickly found his vocals employed on a variety of albums by fellow African expatriates such as Ray Lema, Papa Wemba and Manu Dibango. He worked with the Soul Makossa Gang in the early 90s and began performing as a solo artist under the name Lokua Kanza. Kanzas debut solo album was released in 1993 and concentrated primarily on his powerful vocal capabilities, supported by a modicum of guitar and percussion.
