Formed in 1994 by saxophonist Mars Williams (1955, Chicago, Illinois, USA), this Chicago-based band offered fans of 70s soul and funk a contemporary slant on the music. Not content with drawing in an older audience, their incorporation of hip-hop assured them also of a youthful element in their fanbase. The musical ingredients did not end there; touches of hard-edged post-bop acid jazz rubbed congenial shoulders with softer Latin jazz in a repertoire that constantly made nonsense of labelling.

Usually an eight-piece ensemble, during the late 90s and on into the next decade, Liquid Soul played numerous concert and club dates across the USA. They also travelled overseas, playing at the Jazz Wind Festival and the Newport Jazz Festival, both in Japan. Releasing a succession of very successful albums, they picked up a Grammy Award nomination for Best Contemporary Jazz Album for 2000’s Here’s The Deal.
