Biography

c.1944, Brooklyn, New York, USA. Clifford was singing professionally at the age of seven and appeared on television variety programmes in 1950-51. At the age of 17 she had won the Miss New York State beauty pageant and by the mid-60s was singing in nightclubs, performing show music, jazz, standards and R&B material. In 1974 Clifford recorded a single, ‘A Long, Long Winter’, for Paramount Records, which made the R&B charts. That was followed by another the next year for the small Gemigo label, a division of Curtis Mayfield’s Curtom Records label. She switched to Curtom itself in 1977 and recorded in the disco genre. An album, Linda, and the single ‘From Now On’ were critically favoured but not commercially successful. However, ‘Runaway Love’ (1978) reached number 3 in the US R&B charts. Her album, If My Friends Could See Me Now, was also a success that year and the title song reached the Top 50 in the UK. Clifford...
