Biography

Originating from Atlanta, Georgia, US party rap trio Lil Jon And The East Side Boyz became mainstays in the mainstream charts during the early years of the twenty-first century, both as a solo act and more frequently as guests on other artist’s recordings. The crew’s main man is Lil Jon (Jonathan Smith, 1971, Clarksdale, Mississippi, USA), a club DJ who initially made his name on the Atlanta-based club scene in the early 90s. He attracted the attention of record company boss and producer Jermaine Dupri, who hired the DJ as executive VP of A&R at Dupri’s So So Def Recordings. During this period, Lil Jon also worked as a producer and radio presenter and set up his own recording unit, Lil Jon And The East Side Boyz. With Lil Jon handling the beats and collaborators Big Sam and Lil Bo providing hooks and lyrics, the crew made their debut in 1996 with Get Crunk, Who U Wit: Da Album.
