Biography
Magdalena Thora, 28 April 1952, Munich, Germany. Stern began playing piano as a small child, later also studying guitar. She listened to rock music and a little jazz although her first career intentions were in film and she began acting with this aim. She continued to play and also to sing. In 1977, she went to the USA to study film scoring at Berklee College Of Music. There, she met guitarist Mike Stern and began a relationship that was at first long range as she returned to Germany after completion of her studies. In the early 80s, she relocated to New York City and concentrated on guitar working with Stern, whom she married, and only much later singing in English after she had fully mastered the language. Drawing musical influences from many areas of pop, rock and jazz, Stern has also incorporated into her work African and Indian forms.
