Vocalist Lovich was one of several acts launched by the Stiff Records label in 1978. The former horror-film soundtrack screamer joined new signings Mickey Jupp, Rachel Sweet and Jona Lewie on the Be Stiff national tour, of which this charismatic performer emerged as the undoubted star. Her arresting, gypsy-like appearance, and warbled intonation was matched by a sense of pops dynamics, as evinced by her UK Top 3 hit, Lucky Number. Shaven-head guitarist Les Chappell provided a visual and compositional foil to a singer who enjoyed further, albeit minor, hits with Say When, Bird Song (both 1979) and New Toy (1981). Lovich also entered the album charts with Stateless, which derived its title from the air of mystery the artist cultivated about her origins. Subsequent releases fared less well and her 1982 single, Its You Only You (Mein Schmerz), provided Lovich with her final chart entry. Problems...
