Biography
Lawrence London, 19 January 1944, London, England. At the age of 13, this pop singer, who had the confidence and showmanship of a veteran, appeared in a closed circuit transmission of 6.5 Special at the BBC stand at the 1958 Radio Show. He so impressed producer John Warrinton that he was invited back every day and thereby came to the attention of EMI Records, who put him in the studio with producer Norman Newell. The result was a Geoff Love -arranged revival of the spiritual Hes Got The Whole World In His Hands. The record climbed to number 12 in the UK and went on to become the most successful record by a British male in the 50s in the USA, topping the Billboard chart. Fame forced London to leave school and his father Will gave up his sales management job to manage him, but he refused the chance of a US tour in 1958 for the 14-year-old.
