This Montreal, Canada-based alternative rock act was formed in 2005 by the charismatic Elizabeth Powell (Moonstone, Ontario, Canada; guitar/vocals, ex-Valentines), a long time anti-folk singer-songwriter who put her modest solo career on hold after meeting Blake Markle (b. New Brunswick, Canada; bass) at Concordia University. The latter brought ex-college friend Bucky Wheaton (b. Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada; drums) on board, completing the initial trio. By the time of the 2006 sessions for their debut, Applause Cheer Boo Hiss, Tim Kramer (b. Guelph, Ontario, Canada; bass) had superseded Markle. Recorded in only three days the album was an impulsive, eclectic affair with a common thread of experimentation running throughout.
