Biography
Formed in Southend, Essex, England, the Kursaal Flyers - Paul Shuttleworth (vocals), Graeme Douglas (guitar), Vic Collins (guitar/steel guitar/vocals), Richie Bull (bass/vocals), and Will Birch (drums) - secured the approbation of producer Jonathan King who signed the quintet to his label, UK. Their 1975 debut Chocs Away and The Great Artiste enjoyed considerable praise for their grasp of melodic pop, and the band also became a popular live attraction, with Shuttleworths spiv persona an undoubted focal point. The Kursaals attained commercial success after joining CBS Records. Little Does She Know reached the Top 20 in 1975 although the group struggled to find a suitable follow-up. Barry Martin replaced Douglas when the latter joined Eddie And The Hot Rods, but the unit disintegrated following Five Live Kursaals.
