Biography

12 May 1936, Berlin, Germany. Doldinger studied classical piano and clarinet at the Robert Schumann Institut der Musikhochschule Rheinland, Dusseldorf. He played traditional jazz as an amateur in the early 50s before turning to the tenor saxophone and developing a more modern style. In the 60s he toured extensively in a quintet with Ingfried Hoffman: Europe, Africa, South America and Asia. Then he formed a jazz rock unit Passport, with which he found success in the 70s and beyond. He also began to write film scores, the best known of which are the music for Das Boot and The Never Ending Story.
