When popular metal act Mercyful Fate split into two separate factions in March 1985, vocalist King Diamond (Kim Bendix Petersen, 14 June 1956, Copenhagen, Denmark), Michael Denner (guitar) and Timi Hansen (bass) decided to pursue their obsession with Satanic heavy metal and the occult, while the others sought a more mainstream direction. King Diamonds music is characterized by supernatural storylines, high-pitched, banshee-like vocals and meandering guitar work. Each successive album has offered ever more complex themes and subplots, resulting in the musical equivalent of a sinister version of Dungeons and Dragons. On live performances, their leader specializes in amateurish theatrical stunts to bring the songs to life. This included face make-up not dissimilar to that worn by Alice Cooper.
