1 January 1953, Detroit, Michigan, USA. Drawn to jazz through hearing the recordings of John Coltrane, Toney began playing piano and keyboards. After studying at Howard University, he first attracted respectful attention in the jazz world when he played piano with the Blackbyrds. Performing on stages with musicians such as Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Grover Washington Jnr. , and others exposed him to even more music and he earned further kudos and considerable experience playing with artists such as Craig T. Cooper, Paul Jackson Jnr. , David Newman, Sharon Redd, Brenda Russell, Marlena Shaw and Andrew White.
An eloquent and elegant player, it was not long before the world of smooth jazz beckoned and Toneys own name albums proved to be very popular.
