25 April 1952, Oslo, Norway. Classically trained as a pianist, at the age of 16 Bjørnstad performed with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. He took an abiding interest in contemporary rock, jazz and improvised music and began recording in this form in 1973. Among his musical collaborators have been classicists Anneli Drecker, Randi Stene, Nora Taksdal and Lars Anders Tomter, rockers Ole Paus and Cornelis Vreeswijk, and jazz musicians Jon Christensen, David Darling and Terje Rypdal. With each of these last three Bjørnstad has played in duo, his collaboration with Rypdal lasting for several years, although they did not record in this format until captured live at a concert for the 2008 release Life In Leipzig.
